Data & The Multimodal City: Designing MDS 2.0

November 9, 2022

BUILDING BEYOND MICROMOBILITY

MDS was built to adapt, accommodating evolving needs around managing emerging mobility. Now in development, the upcoming MDS 2.0 release will go beyond micromobility, adding new modes to the specification so that it can meet use cases around personal delivery devices (delivery robots), free-floating car share, taxis, and more. This work is focused on the architecture and design decisions needed to adapt MDS and is built upon initial learnings from cities and companies that have conducted related test projects.

This September, the Open Mobility Foundation’s MDS Working Group focused on the addition of new modes, dubbed “Modes Month”. The sprint of work focused on different aspects of new modes – passenger services, delivery robots, and carshare. We recently shared learnings from Modes Month at a webinar co-hosted with Curbivore.

WEIGH IN ON MDS 2.0

Based on the public working group meetings during Modes Month, and the feedback from the working group on GitHub over the last year, the OMF now has a complete draft of the modes work for MDS 2.0 ready for final discussion and review. This includes MDS for micromobility, passenger services, car share, and delivery robots.

To get involved in the open development process:

  1. Review the draft here in the updated dev branch.
  2. Review the comments, action items, and actions taken from the prior working group meetings.
  3. Leave general comments on this open PR #801.
  4. Leave inline and detailed comments on the specific changes in PR #801.
To attend a public working group meeting, mark your calendar and join the group virtually to learn about the work, ask questions, and share your needs with the community. And, make sure you are on the MDS Mailing List to get the latest info, recaps, and calendar invites.
